The Suns need to trade for Ricky Rubio in order to unlock Deandre Ayton’s full scoring potential. Devin Booker is fine, but he’s not a true PG who can consistently set him up for makeable buckets. I shouldn’t need to remind anyone of what Rubio did to Karl-Anthony Towns’ scoring output, but these three words should ring some bells: “pick” “and” “pop”.
Ayton can shoot jumpers. Maybe it’s not the best part of his game, but he can shoot them. I don’t know the intricacies of how the Timberwolves managed to get KAT so many midrange jumpers, because I literally have no idea about the X’s and O’s of basketball, but I bet some of the coaches on the Suns do know that stuff. And they would know how to run an offense with Rubio and Ayton where Ayton got to feast on open jumpers. Hopefully. And if Devin Booker got salty about it, they could rest Rubio for certain games (because he’s super old now, like 28 or something) and tell Booker to score 70 in those contests.
For now, Booker is decent enough at getting Ayton a few easy buckets per game. Ayton can do lots of the work himself, with post-ups and face-up jumpers where he holds the ball for 15 seconds and offensive rebounds. All those scouting reports from before he was drafted didn’t get it wrong; this dude can definitely score.
