Richaun Holmes currently leads the entire NBA in field goal percentage, at 65%. Okay, that statement needs to be qualified a little bit. Holmes leads all eligible players in field goal percentage. I don’t know what the prerequisites are for qualifying for the season leaderboards, but Holmes meets them. Patrick McCaw, who is shooting 100% from the field this season, does not meet them. Neither does DeAndre Jordan, who is sitting at 77% shooting right now.
But I’ve gotten off topic. The point is, Richaun Holmes is a bucket machine right now, and his high accuracy from the field is even more impressive when you consider that 99.3% of his shot attempts are jump-floaters from ten feet in front of the basket. He has perfected that shot more than anybody in NBA history, or, at least, my view of NBA history, which extends back a decade and then abruptly stops. When that floater goes up, it’s not a matter of if it goes in or not, it’s a matter of whether the refs give him the conventional two points for it, or if they give him five points for it, on account of that shot not exactly being en vogue in the current era of the NBA. As of yet, I have not seen a ref exercise the five point option for that shot, but I can tell they’re thinking about it.
Holmes’ push shot is so inspiring to me that I fully plan to revamp my pickup game this summer and feature that shot prominently in my arsenal. Gone will be my reliance on middy jimbos and fast-break undefended layups that I blow 90% of the time.
