Ancient Assyrians and Parthians understood the advantage that could be gained in warfare by arming their mounted units with spears, or “lances”. Their insights into the art of war motivated the legendary Greek and Roman empires to try a similar tactic in combat, and Alexander the Great’s elite “Companion Cavalry” wreaked havoc on Persian and other middle-eastern armies in what could be deemed the first-ever use of “shock and awe”. In the middle ages, the lance evolved into the pike and was taken up by ground infantry, ushering in a new era of dominance for various European kingdoms.
Lance Thomas does not really live up to the storied history of the weapon for which he is named, but that’s okay. Not even Jordan or Durant is as cool as a bunch of dudes riding horses and stabbing each other to death with pointy sticks.
Back to Civilization III for me.
