Dewayne Dedmon got a late start to his basketball career, not playing until halfway through high school because his crazy Jehovah’s Witness mom didn’t want him serving two masters (the coach being the “bad” master, and God being the “good” master). If he had started in elementary school like every other normal kid, would he be like prime Olajuwon right now? We’ll never know. It seems like he’s finally hitting his stride at age 27, but he could have been this good at 17 if his growth hadn’t been stunted by a cult.
Then again, maybe he wouldn’t have a nonstop motor if he had been a hyped prospect at a young age. Maybe he would just settle for crappy hook shots and easy rebounds. Perhaps the adversity of being a latecomer to the game has actually allowed him to be as successful in the NBA as he has been. In that case, Dedmon’s mom is not a fanatic cultist, but instead, a loving mother guided by divine light who had the best interests for her son at heart.
Man, I thought I had my opinion all formed and ready to go and then I had to come along and ruin it.
