Spencer Hawes has been racking up DNPs for his entire tenure in Charlotte thanks to the untimely drafting of one Frank Kaminsky. Games like this prove he can still be a credible offensive threat if given the minutes, but there’s hardly room on the roster for one slow-afoot, no-defense, three-pointering big white guy, much less two of them. He needs to go to a team that has no stretch bigs on the roster so he can play twenty-five minutes off the bench, not just get spot minutes due to injuries like how it’s been for him on the Hornets.
Hawes had a very Hawesian performance this game, hitting some threes and also some buckets near the rim that didn’t require him to jump. He also fouled out in 25 minutes of action, presumably because he makes up for his lack of foot speed by defending with his arms, which he would then smack into people. The caveat of having an guy like Hawes on your team is that he’ll only rarely give you as much on offense as he gives up on defense, but DownToBuck doesn’t care about defense. That explains why I think he’s still good.
