Ryan Anderson began the process of excising the two-point shot from his game when he arrived in Houston. He would still take layups when presented with them, obviously, but the midrange jumper was deployed from his arsenal with less and less frequency. Now, in his second season with the team, he is shooting an insane 64% on two-point attempts, but only attempting two such shots per game. I feel like most of his inside attempts are because he gets mistaken for Clint Capela and is given the ball inside when really he should be running back outside the three-point line so he can receive the ball there.
So now there are two midrange masters, Chris Paul and Ryan Anderson, playing in an offense that doesn’t go so far as to specifically disallow midrange jumpers, but is certainly geared away from that shot. Clearly the Rockets are playing well and using Paul’s/Anderson’s in other, more effective ways, but I can’t help but feel disappointment and the way things have turned out.
Luckily I made midrange-ilations for both of those players in the past, so my memories of their midrange dominance on other teams can never fade.
