It’s sort of weird to think about, but Wes Matthews has only made more than seven three-pointers in a single game two times. He once made eight while playing for the Blazers, and back in December of 2015 he made ten of them for the Mavericks. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the Steph Curries and Klay Thompsons and Eric Gordons of the world, who will happily shoot threes all day and make most of them, but seven doesn’t even seem like that many. When I go shoot hoops by myself at the park or at the gym (because I’m too meek to join pickup games filled with tryhards and tall people), I usually make way more than seven three-pointers. In that sense, I’m a better three-point shooter than Matthews is.
I also have healthy, intact, un-ruptured Achilles tendons. So there’s that, too. Put another tally in the DTB column.
The plan for Matthews is probably to stick around on the Mavericks providing three-pointers and veteran wisdom until his contract runs out, and then he can sign a bargain deal with some contender to bolster their bench. I envision him going out the way David West is going out; still being useful, and maybe deserving of a bigger role than he gets, but content to take a smaller role in exchange for hella championship rings.
