If both D.J. Augustin and Jonathon Simmons had gotten career-highs against the Bucks, I think I would’ve lost it for real. But while Simmons did eclipse his personal best, Augustin fell 3 points shorts of the 35 he had for Detroit (LOL) back in early 2015, so I’m happy as a clam right now. If I’m remembering correctly, which I probably am not, that performance happened during a stretch where he looked like a real legit NBA PG, so much so that another team traded for him and he turned back into a pumpkin. I’m going to go double check that. Be right back.
I’m back, and I have returned with confirmation that I was correct. He got traded to the Thunder a few weeks later, and he didn’t much of anything. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Augustin over his career, it’s that he’s really good at playing well for a new team then finding a new new team to suck for, then starting the process over again. It’s the story of his career. Perhaps it’s happening again. Some team will see this game and decide “that is the man who will be our backup PG” and trade for him and then an injury will happen and he’ll be the starter and eventually all that team’s fans will hate him.
Maybe not though. The Magic gave him a pretty long contract, and his current two-year stint with them is his longest time with a single team since his 4-season rookie contract with the Bobcats. Has he finally found a home in Orlando? That would be the most Magic thing ever, because he absolutely doesn’t “move the needle” even a little bit, but it would still be nice to see him not jetting all over the country to play half-seasons for random teams.
