This game marks a very important milestone for Luka “Lukadris” Doncic. No, not that he became the first rookie since Steph Curry to score 25 points in five consecutive games, although that is a fun and cool stat (one could even call it a “fun fact”). No, the real milestone is that Doncic had a good game while also only shooting two free throws.
The past few weeks, there has been some minor backlash against Doncic for drawing too many fouls. I personally don’t care how many fouls he draws since he’s just taking advantage of how contact is called in today’s NBA, but I do personally care about how many free throws he makes, if that makes sense at all. Basically, free throws can turn an “exciting” thirty-point game into a “lame” thirty-point game.
The next step for Doncic to increase his highlight video watchability (which is already dangerously high, especially when said video is not unnecessarily bogged down with free throws) is to have a game where his entire point ouput comes as a result of stepback three-pointers. His efficiency might suffer and his teammates might stop passing him the ball once they realize that he will only shoot in when in a stepback three situation, but this is a surefire way to generate the most watchable, enteraining highlight video the world has ever seen.
