It’s not shown in this video, but Davis Bertans was afforded the opportunity to be the hero in this game when he took a leaning baseline jumper with four seconds left in the game, the Spurs down by one. It wasn’t really a good look, but that’s on DeMar DeRozan for getting locked down hard on his ISO attempt. It’s not Bertans’ fault that he got the ball in a bad situation with time dwindling.
It’s also not Bertans’ fault that he doesn’t have the court vision necessary to find the open man in stressful situations. His job isn’t to make plays, it’s to shoot shots. So when he gets the ball near the end of the game and the play has devolved into unpredictable chaos, he’s gonna shoot it. It’s not like anybody will block his shot, so in that sense, it’s a better look than a lot of the looks that his teammates would get in a similar situation.
As you can see, I’m bending all kinds of different directions in order to avoid blaming Bertans for this loss, even though he’s the one who missed a potential game-winning shot. I don’t want to make Latvians upset lest they stop watching my videos.
