After that 29-point game he had back in early January, I felt like people were being way too hasty in crowning Kevin Huerter AKA Butthuert AKA Kevin Huerant. Maybe it’s just due to my pessimistic nature, but I had a feeling that Huerter couldn’t possibly live up to the standards that people were suddenly placing on him. People assumed that he was a surefire Klay Thompson clone who was inevitably going to be part of the Hawks’ big three with Trae Young and John Collins. I say “people” here meaning all those who viewed highlights of his 29-point game.
Well, as always, I was right. Huerter has had some decent games in the intervening two months, but, until now, none that screamed “This guy is guaranteed to be Klay Thompson but with more athleticism”. He was looking more like “decent shooting role-player with maybe potential to be more than that down the road”. Those are the kinds of descriptors I prefer. Free from hyperbole and aggrandizement. Grounded in reality and realistic expectations.
Now, with this 27-point performance, the hype train will get going just as fast as it was going before. And I, regrettably, will continue to feed coal into that hype train by shamelessly uploading highlight videos whenever Butthuert has a good game. However, I will not actually board the hype train myself. Not until he scores thirty, anyway.
