This video was made basically to commemorate a career-high in assists for Derrick Favors, who honestly looked like Lamar Odom 2.0 based on this one game. He was making good decisions with the ball, whether looking to score or looking to pass, and who cares if one of his assists was actually an airballed floater? If you run over to the scorers’ table and threaten their families with physical violence, they’ll give you that assist. Every time.
If Favors could consistently become more of a facilitator, then the Gobert/Favors combination has an even better chance of working together. However, based on Favors’ entire body of work up to this point (this is his ninth season and now I’m freaking out because the decade is almost over), I don’t expect him to continue racking up dimes like this. He’s never been el black hole supremo, but he’s never averaged more than two assists per 36 minutes in his career. The Suns’ unique inability to play defense may have opened up passing opportunities that aren’t there against defenses who are, well, defending.
So, my recommendation is, enjoy this video for what it is, but don’t get too attached to the superior version of Derrick Favors that you witness therein. Do not be seduced by the siren’s call of a Favors who can pass the rock.
