I am getting confused right now. Who exactly is the Knicks’ shooting guard of the future? Is it Damyean Dotson or Allonzo Trier? Both of them are averaging around ten points per game, but often have games where they score way more than that, and neither of them was expected to do a whole lot coming into the season.
If I had to try to differentiate between them, I would say that Trier is more of a “pure scorer” (AKA chucker) while Dotson fits slightly more into the team concept. The most common complaint I see levied against Trier is his absolute lack of court awareness – he just goes in there and tries to score the rock. This is the same problem that fellow Knicks rookie Kevin Knox has, so I would imagine that the Knicks might try to minimize the amount of players on their squad that have this flaw. That’s why I think that Dotson is the SG of the future, and not Trier. Trier can be the sixth-man Jamal Crawford clone.
It sounds like I’m hating on Trier a bit too much here, and maybe I am, so I’m going to say something good about him: 10 PPG for an undrafted rookie is good. Really good. I don’t remember the last time it happened. So, good for him to take a bad situation on a bad team and turn it into a not-so-bad situation on a bad team. Also, good job getting fellow SG’s Courtney Lee and Tim Hardaway Jr. traded to the Mavericks by your persuasive argument to the front office that “those old farts are taking my minutes and aren’t even contributing to a positive locker room culture”.
