Bobby Portis is shooting 42% from three with the Wizards on a not-insignificant amount of attempts (four per game). You know what that means, right? Right?
It means that Bobby Portis no longer a theoretical stretch four. He is a LEGIT stretch four. Legitly legit. Unlike a lot of so-called “stretch fours”, who only are “stretchy” because they have the ability to shoot 33% on three-pointers while not having any other scoring ability, Portis has now shown his ability to both be a credible three-point threat and have other scoring moves in his arsenal besides “stand behind the three-point line and wait for the ball”.
Since Portis is a LEGIT stretch four, he will command a lot of money in the free-agent marketplace. GM’s might not be fighting to be the first to phone Portis’ agent when the free-agency clock strikes twelve midnight, but they’ll definitely be calling around one or two in the morning after they’ve called KD and Kyrie and those guys and gotten rejected. The Wizards will have to decide if they want to shell out for this guy or if they’ll be content to have been used as an audition platform by Portis for a third of a season.
Knowing Grunfeld, they’ll probably keep him, and they’ll give him a max. And then, knowing the Wizards, he’ll develop back problems and have to take an early retirement ala Martell Webster. And then, knowing Portis, he’ll punch something. Hopefully Grunfeld. Or Webster.
