As of right now (and there are still games going on, so if this info changes, blame the interminable march of time and NOT your old pal DTB who only seeks to inform and never mislead), Davis Bertans is 9th in the league in total threes made. Right ahead of Bryan Forbes, and right behind Damian Lillard. I’ve been told that the league is having a three-point shooting bonanza every game, in arenas all across the country. So why aren’t there more people above Bertans? I mean, it’s just Bertans. He’s just a really good three-baller, not really top-10 material though.
Maybe he is though? It’s hard to tell how good he really is, with Gregg Popovich misusing him for three years in San Antonio. Popovich would rather LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan spam midrange jumpers than have Bertans and the Spurs’ other elite shooters bomb away shamelessly from deep. It still feels weird to have Bertans not be in San Antonio, but maybe it’s for the best.
With the ‘Zards, there doesn’t seem to be a limit on how many threes he’s allowed to shoot. And his shooting is paying dividends: the ‘Zards are one of the best offensive teams in the league. They can’t play defense worth a hoot (and Bertans certainly exacerbates that problem), but I’d rather have every game be a 125-131 loss than a bunch of other possible outcomes.
