If you just ignore all the context surrounding the game, including seemingly-pertinent details like the score, and focus ONLY on Darius Garland scoring these 17 points, you can come away with the impression that this ISN’T the most depressing “highlight” video ever made.
The second you look at the final score of the game (which was rudely included because Garland scored with 3 seconds left, frickin’ statpadder), or at Garland’s percentages, or at at how many threes Ben Simmons made, the illusion is broken. I couldn’t avoid knowing all the context, but you, you can still remain of pure of heart and enjoy these Garland buckets for what they are.
Does it count as “fake news” if the promise of this video and the reality of this video are so different? I don’t want to be fake news. I want to be real news. Is the way for me to become a respected basketball pundit (implying I’m not already, HA!) making “full play” videos where I show misses and turnovers and stuff? Such a video for this performance by Garland would be SO SAD to watch. Oh my gosh.
