There are a lot of efficiency stats to choose from. I don’t know why there has to be so many, it seems like everyone could agree that one of them is the best and then just use that one and forget about the rest. But the current situation is better for Duncan Robinson, because it means there are more things for him to be one of the top players in the league in.
It’s easy to be efficient when all you do is stand outside the arc and shoot threes at a 45 percent clip, or sometimes wander inside for a barely-contested layup. He is taking tough shots sometimes, threes from way deep or with a hand right in his face, but for the most part he’s just catching and shooting.
Which is why efficiency stats aren’t the end-all be-all of being a good basketball player. Robinson is great at what he does, but what he does is pretty much all he does. He’s not offering a ton in other areas of the game. I’m super-duper hyped for him, and hope he does well in three-point shooting contest this year (I’m just assuming he gets in, if he doesn’t then I’m going to organize my own three-point shooting contest to be held concurrently at my local elementary school gym and he is totally invited), but I’m going to continue calling him the next Jason Kapono until he adds something else to his game. Maybe some midrange? I love me some midrange, and I bet he could be a killer at it. Call him the white LaMarcus Aldridge.
