The likelihood of Lob City reforming in Los Angeles seems rather low, and if it were to reform at all, it would be on the Lakers (who have lob-catchers AD and McGee, as well as lob-throwers Rondo and LeBron) and not on the Clippers. That makes me sad in a way, but there’s also no point in clinging to the past and trying to re-create past successes, especially when your team is poised for a new type of success.
The Clippers just don’t have the personnel to make Lob City a thing again. The closest they have is the frightening pick-and-roll tandem of Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, but, as last season’s Harrell dunkilation informed us, there’s not a whole lot of lob-throwing going on there. Their starting point guard, Patrick Beverley, is not known for being a particularly creative passer. And their other main dunkers, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, are much more likely to drive in for their dunks rather than catch alley-oops.
Meanwhile, Ivica Zubac doesn’t seem like he could jump high enough to catch an alley-oop even if the pass was perfect. He’s definitely one of those big men whose game more land-based and less air-based. But he does dunk it enough that he contributes to my new moniker of “Dunk City” which I just came up with ten seconds ago. Him, Harrell, George, Leonard, JaMychal Green, and Moe Harkless can combine their dunking efforts to make Dunk City into a worldwide phenomenon. Just make sure to give me a cut of the proceeds when the team store sells out of Dunk City t-shirts within two hours.
