According to Win Shares, which are the perfect advanced stat if the criterion for perfection is “making Brandon Clarke look as good as possible”, Brandon Clarke is the best rookie in the 2019 draft class. He is helped by a large portion of his class being either injured or just straight-up bad, but he is also helped by the fact that he is a good basketball player. A seemingly underrated trait when it comes to deciding who is draft-worthy.
As far as I can tell, NBA draft scouts didn’t like him because of two things:
Thing one: he was kind of old, which obviously means he’s done developing, and what could be worse than having an already developed player not get a whole ton better.
Thing two: his wingspan was basically the same as his height, a big problem in an era where wingspan has overridden height as the most valuable trait for a bigman.
And if you’re a conspiracy theorist, you can add a bonus third thing:
Thing three: he’s Canadian.
