Robert Covington 20 Points Full Highlights (1/2/2020)

If you listen to the commentary of this video (and I don’t blame you if you leave it muted by default, since it is often insufferable), you’ll notice the Timberwolves commentary crew waxing romantic about Robert Covington, and how it’s great that he was somewhat of a focal point for the offense in this game.

That doesn’t make sense to me. Covington is having an average-efficiency season, with his improvement on two point shots getting offset by his regression in three-point accuracy. He’s never been the type of player that you try to feature in any way, shape, or form, and he’s exceedingly unlikely to become that type of player. If you gave him fifteen shots per game regularly, you would probably get seventeen points per game out of him and you’d be wondering why Towns wasn’t getting those shots. Sure, with the Wolves’ injury report looking like it currently does, somebody will have to take more shots and that somebody will often be Covington, but that’s not going to be a long-term thing.

Usually the Timberwolves commentators are the best in the game, but they were probably just overreacting to the fact that their shorthanded team made easy work of a shorthanded Warriors team. If they were thinking clearly, they would appreciate the good game that RoCo had, but they would in no way advocate for him to start getting a higher volume of shots up. I mean, look at his skinny chicken legs. Do you think those chicken legs could handle shooting jumpshots for an entire forty minutes? They would have to amputate them right there on the court.
