Bobby Portis is one of those few players who just absolutely has no fans. At least, no fans who are willing to watch highlight videos of him on YouTube. I don’t know what kind of a person you would have to be to be a fan of a player but not want to watch a highlight video of them, though. The bad kind of person, I guess.
Note: if you are going to come in here and try to declare yourself a fan of Portis, be aware that that’s exactly what a Russian bot would say.
Just from a pure aesthetics standpoint, there’s nothing wrong with Portis’ game. In fact, there’s a lot right with it. When he’s on, he’s actually a very nice scorer, with a pleasing jumper that should delight any aficionado of shooting bigmen. He also has some nice moves closer to basket that bring to mind certain greats of the Knicks’ past: Patrick Ewing, Willis Reed, Jerome Jordan, etc.
But he can do whatever he wants on the court, and no one is going to pay attention unless it involves him getting into some kind of altercation. If there’s one thing the casual NBA fan can tell you about him, it’s that he punched his own teammate so hard that the teammate was out for several months. They can’t tell you about his sweet jumper, or his big eyeballs, or anything.
Maybe they should watch this video.
