Pass-first point guards combined with lob-catching big men are like a match made in heaven. Chris Paul + DeAndre Jordan, Russell Westbrook (not pass-first but still passes a lot because of ballhog tendencies) + Steven Adams, Andre Miller + JaVale McGee, James Harden + Clint Capela, all of these combos result in high-flying dunks for the fans and outrageous efficiency numbers for the big (provided they don’t try to score in any other way).
Trae Young has got a good thing going with John Collins right now, but there’s no rule that says a team can’t have two lob-catching bigs on the same roster. Based on this game, and a few other Hawks games I’ve seen, it’s shaping up that Damian Jones is also an excellent pairing with Young. You could even play Collins and Jones at the same time (it’ll happen often if they both start) and have the defense constantly on edge about being dunked on. The term “poster party” is often used to describe a single instance of posterization, but, for this Hawks team, it could actually mean a literal party of posters where dudes are getting posterized left and right.
I’m a tiny bit jealous because, as a Bucks fan, I’ve never actually seen a glorious, unstoppable lob connection like what the Hawks have. The closest was, like, OJ Mayo and John Henson. Or Giannis (when he was really running the point under Kidd) and Miles Plumlee. Obviously those tandems were nothing like the ones I listed above.
