Andre Drummond has been implicated in trade rumors for a while now. The frenzied whispering between GM’s has heightened in volume to be more of like a loud conversation: “Hey we want Andre Drummond! Take our [garbage player] and our [large asset bundle] and you won’t have to worry about dealing with him in free agency!” “Yeah we’ll trade him and then your fanbase will hate your front office forever because he takes too many crappy hook shots and constantly gets dominated by skilled bigmen, of which there are more and more of in the league each year!”
If Andre Drummond does get traded and no starting-caliber centers are received in return, then the date of that trade will mark the true beginning of the Christian Wood era in Detroit. The eras will be marked by the denotations B.C. (“Before Christ(ian)”) and A.D. (“Andre Drummond (is gone forever and he can’t hurt us)”). Do I care that Wood might be more of a PF than a C? Not really. He can dominate at either spot, in my mind. If you give him thirty MPG per game and you don’t have Drummond clogging up the offense with meaningless post touches, he’ll drop 20/10’s nonstop. Non friggin stop. No stopping. Ever.
I’m hyping myself up too much over the prospect of Wood being truly unleashed for the final two months of the season. What if Drummond doesn’t get traded and the status quo remains the same? I’ll be crushed. Maybe not as crushed as Wood himself will be (I’m sure he’s F5’ing Woj constantly to see where Drummond ends up), but still plenty crushed. There’s an idiom about counting chickens before they hatch and I think it applies to me. But it’s better to count the unhatched eggs than it is to let some stupid oaf stomp all the eggs with his stupid stupidness. In this metaphor, the eggs are Christian Wood and the stupid oaf is Dwane Casey/Tom Gores/Ed Stefanski.
