Six assists seems like a lot for Seth Curry until you remember (or learn for the first time, if you’re a filthy casual) that he had a 15-assist game with the Kings in the penultimate game of the 2015-16 season. My video for that performance sadly was purged during the DTB-pocalypse, but I still have the backup, and I can watch it whenever I want. Like right now, so I can tell you if he dimed up Willie Cauley-Stein fewer, more, or the same amount of times he did in this vid, which was two.
Okay, so it turned out that Curry dimed up WCS three times out of his 15 assists. I thought it was going to be a lot more, honestly, because I’m stupid and I forgot that Curry and Kosta Koufos had the SICKEST chemistry ever going on around that point in their respective careers. Curry found Koufos SO MANY times, now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure my description for that vid was that Curry can be a good distributor if and only if he has Koufos on his team. Which is true, apparently, because they’ve never been reunited and Curry has never come even close to 15 assists since then.
I don’t see why someone who is actually good like Kristaps Porzingis can’t technically be a suitable replacement for Koufos when it comes to feeds from Curry, but chemistry is a weird thing that no one should pretend to understand. Sometimes it appears, sometimes it disappears, but it’s always random. There’s no accounting for it, and even if he and Koufos were put on the same team again, it’s likely that whatever was in the air in Sacramento is not in the air in Dallas.
Don’t be sad that it’s over. Be happy that it happened.
