When Hornets commentator Eric Collins exclaimed excitedly that P.J. Washington “had his jammies on” in reference to a big dunk, it blew my mind. How had I not ever thought of that pun? It seems so obvious now, but it apparently wasn’t obvious enough for my dumb brain to come up with it. That’s embarrassing because I’m always on the prowl for cool wordplay like that.
This is almost as groundbreaking for me as that time Eric Collins said “Jordan Clarkson almost came in my lap!” and then had his eyes totally bug out when he realized how his words could have been construed. Also Stephanie Ready started giggling after that. Every few weeks I go back and watch that clip again. It never gets old. I’ll even link it here so you can share in my mirth (I promise this isn’t a rickroll): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSjfSMU-Kqw
And here’s a bonus clip of the Timberwolves commentators talking about sharts (I’ve been watching this one every day since I found out about it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXsgBDj1PjY
And one with the Kings guys talking about memes, another classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kku-FnBdsqY
I think “has his jammies on” has entered my personal lexicon in the span of, like, ten minutes. I’m going to say that for every dunk I see. If I’m at a pickup game and somebody dunks it (which means I’m at the wrong pickup game), I’ll yell it and then collect high-fives from everybody on the dunker’s behalf. I’m so ready to use this.
