There is a very real possibility that when all is said and done, when the fat lady has sung (am I still allowed to use that turn of phrase in 2021????? please don’t cancel me), Reggie Jackson will have been the starting point guard on a championship team.

I can hear the wails and laments of Pistons fans, but I pay them no heed.

That’s assuming Jackson keeps starting, and assuming the Clippers win the chip. Both assumptions, to be sure, but reasonable ones. Unless the Clippers get into their head that they want to start Rajon Rondo. Which would definitely tank both assumptions. There’s no way they do that, right? Right. No way. No way.

And then when that happens, when Jackson is the starting point guard on a championship team, that will solidify his legacy as a totally forgotten about player who will sometimes randomly be stumbled upon by lonely basketball-reference wanderers. And they will be like “wow, this guy was pretty good, look at those stats, and he won a championship too? How come I’ve never heard of him?”.

If he continues wearing the goggles, maybe his legacy can be inflated a little bit. People love players with goggles. The bigger, the better. When people think Kareem, what do they imagine? A gigantic bald twig with big goggles attached to his face with the dorkiest elastic straps ever. It’s iconic. Jackson’s goggles aren’t iconic, but if he keeps putting up 26 and 7 while wearing them? Still not iconic.
