Sometimes new eras sneak up on you without you realizing that you’ve transitioned from on era to the other. For example, the industrial revolution represented a bold new era of human productivity, but the people who made the first crappy steam engine hooked up to a janky loom probably didn’t realize they were in a new era. They just knew they had a quicker way to make clothes and that you could train impoverished child workers to operate the thing.

With the Spurs, it’s a bit more obvious that there’s a shift in eras. And I’m not even talking about the “big three” era. That’s ancient history at this point. I’m talking about the “post big three” era, where the Spurs went out and got DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge so they could pretend that they were still relevant. You can see the “post big three” era ending right in front of you and you don’t have to be a genius to figure out that it’s ending.

LMA scored four points in his last game and was inactive in this one. In his absence, Dejounte Murray notched a career high. The only conclusion that we can draw from this is that LMA is washed-up garbage and Murray is the new proto-star that should be built around. Throw DeMar DeRozan and his ever-swirling trade rumors into the mix, and Popovich’s imminent retirement, and you can see that this unexciting era of Spurs basketball is drawing to a close, to be replaced with a fun new era where Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker, and Derrick White form their own big three that can win up to 45 games in season while hitting midrange jumpers and playing defense.

Yep, this era shift is happening in front of our eyes. I refuse to be caught off-guard by these things ever since the Luke Babbitt era ended without me even getting to say a proper goodbye.
