I would say that, most of the time, fanbases are decidedly inaccurate in their assessment of their own players. Putting on the homer goggles will usually present your eyeballs with a wildly distorted vision of reality, and the problem with all fanbases is that the homer goggles are permanently attached. There’s no taking those goggles off to get an unfiltered look at how things really are. You can try to be as impartial as you want, but as long as the homer goggles are strapped onto your head, you’re going to be overrating players left, right, and center.

However, there are times when the homer goggles result in assessments that are actually accurate. That is the case with Keldon Johnson, who was relentlessly hyped up by Spurs fans last season despite doing very little of note until the Bubble started. Even while he was collecting DNPs or bumming around in the G-League or whatever it was he was doing, Spurs fans were super high on him. I couldn’t figure it out at the time. Now I know that they were seeing something that I didn’t, and it was their homer goggles that allowed these forbidden glimpses into the true potential held within Johnson’s loins.

In fact, I would say that Johnson’s potential is so high that we can forget about “defensive specialist” Dejounte Murray and “big forehead man” Derrick White. Those guys can be complementary pieces to the sick core of Keldon Johnson, Lonnie Walker, and maybe, like, Luka Samanic or something.

I wish I had a pair of homer goggles so I could be take part in the fun, but I threw mine out for good after the Bucks got bounced in the playoffs last year. I’m still sort of a Bucks fan, but I’m more of a detached enthusiast than a slavering diehard, so there was no need for me to keep the goggles. Since I now have no ability to view players threw the lens of a homerific Spurs fan who thinks that all of their players are All-Stars in the making, I will be heavily relying on Spurs fans themselves to provide their totally biased and unreliable takes.
