As a consequence of my semi-retirement, I haven’t been paying attention to NBA drama as much as I used to. It’s relaxing to not have to try to keep track of who tweeted what or who gave sus interview answers or who is rumored to be involved in some random trade scenario. However, the consequences of my ignorance are never laid more bare than in situations like this, where I have to write something about a player whose drama-filled existence has enraptured the minds of most NBA fans.
Anthony Edwards was the first overall pick, and I’m pretty sure he said over the off-season that he liked football more than basketball. Did I make that up? I’m sorry if I’m spreading fake news here, but he definitely said one or many things in that vein, things that caused people to question whether he was really committed to basketball. I might be getting the specifics wrong, but there were definitely concerns that his heart wasn’t in it, and that he was going to be Andrew Wiggins 2.0 for the Timberwolves in terms of a guy who puts up empty stats and doesn’t bring 100% effort every night.
I can totally sympathize with not bringing 100% nonstop effort, by the way. I’m totally coasting right now. Just call me DownToCoast.
Anyway, Edwards has been solid enough in his first few games that the immediate fears of him just straight-up being an Anthony Bennett-level bust have been assuaged for now. His scoring game is alright. Playing with Ricky Rubio can only help him succeed. However, knowing his previous tendency to make worrisome comments to the media, I definitely plan to kind of pay attention to the headlines that have his name in them, and I also definitely plan to maybe remember what those headlines were talking about. That way I can be 50% more informed than the average basketball fan commenting on YouTube (no shade at my own commentators, you guys are alright).
