Do we have any insight into what’s going on in Killian Hayes’ head right now? He was drafted to be the point guard of the future for the Pistons, but he got injured, and now the two-headed beast of Saben Lee and Dennis Smith Jr. are both busting out simultaneously. Hayes is probably pretending to be happy for, and supportive of, his teammates right as we speak. But the fake smile he wears awkwardly on his face is just that: fake. Inside he feels nothing but burning hatred, and burning shame that, even when healthy, he didn’t look as impressive as either of these guys.
Speaking of Pistons players who might be in a bad headspace right now, what about Delon Wright? Wright’s not under any illusions of being a franchise cornerstone, but he’s practically getting replaced right in front of our eyes. Saben Lee, the lowly two-way player who wasn’t supposed to even be good, is dropping twenty-burgers left and right, making Wright more and more expendable. I’m sure Wright always knew in the back of his mind that he was trade fodder (not super sought-after trade fodder like Wayne Ellington and Derrick Rose, but trade fodder nonetheless), but it still must be a blow to the ego to get displaced by Saben Lee of all players.
Meanwhile, Saben Lee just played a major part in a well-rounded team win over the heavily favored Raptors. Was this win the highlight of the Pistons’ season, watching underused bench players team up to take down Goliath? Unless Jerami Grant drops 81 points Kobe style later in the season, I would say that, yes, this win is the highlight of the Pistons’ season.
