Dorian Finney-Smith AKA DFS AKA Distributed File System is like the best-case scenario for a guy who you pick up on a whim to play on your Summer League team. He’s an adequate, if low-volume, scorer, and he’s a plus defender. Teams are constantly combing Europe, the G-League, and Summer League for guys who can develop into a player like that, but only for a select few does that development actually pan out. DFS is one of those select few. For every DFS, there’s like twenty dudes who fit the physical profile of a 3+D wing but don’t have the skills to make it work long-term in the NBA. Excuse me while I lovingly caress the picture of Austin Daye I have framed on my wall.
The best part about DFS is that he knows his limitations, so he won’t feel upset that Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis (when the latter isn’t laying in a hospital bed connected to ten different life-support systems) are taking all the shots and getting all the glory. DFS absorbs the residual glory that emanates from those two and doesn’t need to have any more glory than that. The minuscule amount of glory he gets from DTB highlight videos is enough for him. Meanwhile, somebody like Tim Hardaway Jr. seems like the kind of guy who would slowly become discontented having to play with players who get to shoot more than he does. He also seems like the kind of guy who would be entirely dissatisfied by the meager amount of glory that my highlight videos provide him.
God I wish somebody would sign Austin Daye again. Please god. Him or Quincy Miller. If we all pray extra hard about it maybe God will listen.
