I have standard when it comes to applying nicknames to players. Good, creative nicknames should only be bestowed upon players who are deserving of them. If a player no longer deserves the nickname that I have given them, then I have the right to retract that nickname, leaving the player without a nickname. Which, of course, is only what they would deserve in such a situation.
At the beginning of this season, Landry Shamet was not playing up to the “Sham-Wow” moniker. In case you forgot, the ShamWow was a super-absorbent towel that was being hawked by the crazy SlapChop guy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q39yGLPkMY). Just as the ShamWow was superior to all other towels in its ability to clean up spills, Landry Shamet was superior to all other role-players in his ability to knock down three-pointers. At least, he was supposed to be superior in that regard. In reality, he was playing less like “Sham-Wow” and more like just straight-up “Shame”.
Shamet was so dismal to start the season that I only now feel comfortable giving him back the “Sham-Wow” nickname. Six of his last seven games have been in double digits, and he just got a career high while making seven three-pointers. In fact, the thirty-burger is so impressive that I feel that he has moved past being “Sham-Wow” and is now “ShamGod”, at least temporarily. And if he scores forty next game, which he probably won’t but is fun to think about, maybe I’ll call him “Shame Dolla”. Yeah, I know the pronunciation doesn’t work. Come over here and fight me if that bothers you. I’ll start crying after one punch and then you’ll feel bad.
