“Dear Diary,

Being an NBA player is hard and scary. Playing basketball is the easy part, but I don’t get why teams always trade me. I told Dad that teams shouldn’t trade me because I’m good at basketball, but he said Austin sometimes teams have to make trades to improve their cap situation.

I wanted to ask why basketball teams would care about caps. I know in baseball they wear caps but not in basketball. But I didn’t ask because Dad sometimes gets frustrated when I ask questions.

When I got traded to the Thunder I got a call from the man from the team and he said not to bother coming to Oklahoma City because they were going to waive me. I know what “waive” means since the Suns did it to me once. I did a good job not crying on the phone but then when I got off the phone I cried because it meant that they didn’t think I was good enough to play for the team. Then my friend Nerlens from the Knicks said that they waived me because I was actually too good and the Thunder wanted to be bad instead. That didn’t make sense but it made me feel better. Nerlens is always patient with me and he laughs at my jokes, and at his house he had a PS5 that we could play games on.

I had to wait a long time for another team to want me. Then the Nuggets signed me and as soon as Dad found me an apartment there I moved there. Denver is a lot more relaxing than New York and my new friend JaVale smokes these funny-smelling cigarettes. Julius used to smoke those too but he said he would punch me if I told on him, so I never told on him because I don’t want anybody to punch me. I said JaVale if I tell on you will you punch me and he laughed and said no marriwana is legal here. Marriwana must be the name of the cigarette. I don’t think I want to try it but maybe I will some day.

Thanks for being there, Diary. Even when I move around all over the place, you always come with me and you don’t complain. You’re my best friend ever.

-Austin”
