Have the Kings attempted to do any sort of promotional tie-in between their 10 PPG per game bench shooting guard Terence Davis and the nearby University of California – Davis, which is just a few miles to the west of Sacramento? I actually don’t know how such a promotion would work, but I’m not the marketing expert here. I’m just the guy who knows enough about the geography of California to realize that the city of Davis is in relatively close proximity to where Terence Davis is currently playing professional basketball.
They could do something where if Davis (the player, not the city) scores twenty points in a game, all the campus food service places give the students a 20% discount on french fries. Or if Davis (the player) scores fifty points in a game, every student gets free tuition for a semester. The possibilities are endless here, and if they do it correctly, they could probably get the college students a little bit more hyped for the local basketball team. In California, the Kings are in clear last place in terms of overall popularity, but they could start making inroads if they just tried a little bit harder to reach this core demographic. Selling kegs of beer with Davis’ face on them (as well as the Kings logo) would be another way to reach these hard-partying youngsters.
Davis (the player) is reaching the end of his contract, so it would be wise for the Kings to figure out what his future is with the team before they go all-in on building their marketing strategy around him. Buddy Hield factors into this in some way but I’m not exactly sure how. Luckily, since it’s the Kings, we can count on the front office to make the wrong decision and further doom the franchise to another decade of mediocrity.
