Georges Niang’s contract ends after this season. After getting paid five million dollars total over three years (a total steal for the Jazz), he’ll be entering the free-agent market as a highly sought-after 3&D player. At age 27, he’ll be standing face-to-face with his first bigtime NBA payday.
(Note that I am making the assumption that the “D” of “3&D” does indeed apply to Niang. I can’t figure out how he would be getting so many minutes otherwise. Since DownToBuck does not care about defense, he could be a total pylon on that side of the ball and I would have no way of knowing. DownToBuck likes the “3”. He does not like the “D”.)
Niang has shot above 40% from three each of the last three seasons. There are a lot of teams who want a role-player that does exactly that. In fact, one could argue that every team in the league that has any sort of playoff aspirations would want a role-player that does exactly that. I predict that there will be a fight over Niang’s services, but not a vigorous fight. No team (except the Kings) will get in a bidding war over a player like Niang. They’ll figure out what they want to pay, and if another team pays more, they’ll survive. And, in the end, it might be the Jazz that end up with him, especially if they have a successful postseason run this year.
This is a good place to stipulate that, by the laws of the internet, Niang will owe me 8.5% of the total pretax value of his new contract on account of the fact that I’ve made a sizable number of highlight videos for him. The highlight videos I have made for him are carefully edited to show him at his best, and the high quality of these videos will play a major part in the decision-making processes of front offices across the league. If Niang or his agent resist entering into this agreement with me, I will have no choice but to delete all Georges Niang highlight videos from my channel and never upload another one ever again. Even if he scores fifty. Niang has to decide if this hit to his e-popularity is worth the small amount of extra money in his wallet.
