The more I watch Mychal Mulder, the more I become convinced that the inevitable conclusion: the Warriors don’t even miss Klay Thompson. Who would miss Klay Thompson when you have a guy who is literally named after Klay’s DAD, and who can hit just as many three-pointers as Klay, and has an absolutely immaculate goatee that rivals the immaculateness of Klay’s own goatee? Mychal Mulder offers all these things, and I can think of no reason that Klay would be missed, other than nostalgic reasons, or perhaps the off-chance that Klay could score 37 points in a single quarter of play while the Kings announcers have a meltdown.
Mulder scored 25 points in a game just over a week ago. And two weeks before that, he scored 26. Now he’s scored 28. All of those point totals are point totals that you could reasonably expect from Klay Thompson. But the guy providing these point totals is like a better Klay Thompson, and I say “better” because he gets paid less money, which means his points-to-dollars ratio is way more attractive for the front office. Ignore the fact that Mulder scored 9, 8, and 5 points in the games before this; it’s just a side-effect of Mulder not being acclimated to being the #2 or #3 scoring option on the team. As he gets more comfortable in that role, the high-scoring games will get even more frequent and the low-scoring games will become non-existent.
I wonder if Kelly Oubre is currently lying in a hospital bed somewhere while sobbing uncontrollably. If he’s watching these late-season Warriors games, he has to see how Mulder fits the Warriors ethos so much better than he does. Mulder can shoot 40% from three, just like Klay can. Oubre can shoot 32% from three on a good day, and while his dunk package is nice, it’s not what the Warriors need. What the Warriors need are the things that Klay provided and the things that Mulder is now able to provide.
The Warriors could unload Klay’s huge contract in the off-season since he is now redundant on the roster. They probably won’t, but they totally could. There’s no guarantee that Klay will be himself when he comes back. Meanwhile, Mulder will always be himself because he will never get injured.
This entire video description is only 40% facetious, by the way.
