Offseason plan for Patrick Williams: learn to be more aggressive scoring the basketball.
Offseason plan for Patrick Williams part two: start a project where you drive around to all of Chicago’s ghettoest chicken places and film yourself reviewing the quality of their food while trying not to get shot.
Those two plans can be happening concurrently, but we’re going to concern ourselves mostly with the first one. Because if I think about ghetto Chicago fried chicken too much, I’m not going to get anything done for the rest of the day because I’m going to be driving down there myself.
So yeah, he definitely needs to work on being an assertive scorer. You’re the 4th overall pick, dammit. No one’s gonna care if you take a few extra shots. You’re the future of the franchise, Zach LaVine might be a little salty but he’s always a little salty about something, so whatever. Just go out there and force the issue a bit. It might not work, but it hardly ever works for young players anyway, so just roll with it. It’s cool. Bulls fans will still love you.
The easiest way for him to practice this is to go back to his hometown, check out the local pickup hotspots from his youth, and totally dominate them. He’s probably some sort of local legend, so he won’t be able to pretend that he’s just a random above-average park player, but either way, he can get a lot of reps in shooting the ball every time he touches it. It’s called “mamba mentality”. If he does that enough times during the summer, he’ll eventually get it into his head that he’s an unstoppable scoring machine who should never defer to anyone, ever, and that mentality can be transferred into his sophomore season.
It seems like earlier in the season he was really fond of taking funky midrange jimbos. I don’t feel like they were going in that much, and I think he’s toned those down (analytics ruining the funness of the NBA once again, SMH my head), but that’s something he should definitely work back into his game next year. If he can shoot those, continue shooting the three ball at a high clip, and use his hops to get easy stuff at the rim, that’s a complete scoring package right there.
