I thought I was done making highlight videos for games from the final night of the 2020-21 regular season, and then I remembered that I had somehow skipped over Damian Jones. God damn it. Nineteen is his season high, and it’s also just his fourth double-digit scoring game of the season (the other three also occurred while he was on the Kings), so it’s not like I have a choice here. I have to make this video. My compulsion towards all things scrub-related DEMANDS that I make this video.
This is a perfect opportunity to mock Lakers fans for thinking that Damian Jones would be good for them. They watched a couple highlight videos and thought that Jones was the answer. He was absolutely not the answer, and any outside observer of sound mind would see that he was not the answer, but Lakers fans, in their infinite and pitiable optimism, were convinced they had signed some kind of valuable shot-blocking big man. What they actually signed was a seven-foot pile of athleticism noticeably devoid of any real basketball talent. He showed nothing on the Suns while playing with Chris Paul, so why would he show anything on the Lakers? It’s a mystery that he played decently well with the Kings, and it’s not a mystery that I feel like unraveling right now. I’m going to attribute his success to the tutelage of Richaun “Push-Shot God” Holmes. Or something.
So now the book has officially closed on the 2020-21 regular season and the play-in games begin. After that, we get a couple rounds of playoffs, and then the Finals happen, and one team is crowned World Champions even though the “world champion” designation is even less accurate than before, given that the Raptors are playing in Florida this year. Damian Jones will sit at home, observing the festivities from a distance and eating ice cream with his bare hands while wondering what his future holds. That’s something we can all relate to.
