There just aren’t enough midgets in the NBA these days. Isaiah Thomas is gone (that 10-day with the Pelicans must not have gone so well), which really sucks, because not only was he was a midget, he was also actually a really good player. Since he regressed into sludge because of his injuries, there hasn’t been a really good midget NBA player.

Note: players who are 5’11” do not count as midgets, because 5’11” is basically six feet, which no sane person would say is midget status.

As far as I can tell, the best midget currently in the league is D.J. Augustin. Now, they claim he’s 5’11”, but he is SO not. So he still counts as a midget. I’ve expressed admiration for him before, because he’s been in the league quite a while for being height-deficient. He didn’t do much with the Bucks, but I appreciated his time with them. I think. At least, he was better than Jeff Teague.

Other than Augustin, the list is pretty grim. Jared Harper has 1 bucket in 2 seasons of play. Chris Clemons was cool but will he ever be the same after his injury? Tremont Waters finally got a highlight video. J.J. Barea… wait! Where did Barea go?

Oh yeah, and Markus Howard, the man of the hour. Based on what I’ve seen from him these last few games, and based on his redonk college stats, there’s a decent change that he can be the midget of the future for the NBA. The rest of the season didn’t go too well for him, but now that he’s got a real role, he’s showing that he can score at the NBA level. It’s tough, because defenders are just that much more defendery, and literally all of them are taller than he is, but he’s been getting it done. 23 points, a new career-high, this is what the regular-season finale is all about. People wanted Bol Bol to go nuts, which is understandable, but for this 5’10” Wisconsinite, seeing another 5’10 Wisconsinite-adjacent ball out is as good as it gets.
