It’s a good thing that Kris Dunn didn’t manage to grab two more boards and get another assist, because otherwise that would’ve been the worst triple-double EVER. In the history of forever. And not just because it would’ve been 10-10-10, objectively the worst statline you can possibly have for a trip-dub, but because most of these “assists” are not really assists.
You can argue that a pass only becomes an assist when it is assigned as such by a scorekeepers, and that there is no other definition for an assist. Yeah, but no. Under such convoluted thinking, any pass to a person who eventually scores could be considered an assist, which is false. Patently false.
For example, look at Dunn’s first “assist” in this video. That’s not an assist. Not in any level of basketball would that be an assist. The scorekeepers gave him an assist, but it’s not an assist. There’s more to the nature of assists than them simply being assigned by a scorekeeper.
Dunn had a few good passes, maybe 4, that were legitimate assists. The rest, nah. I almost regret making this video, because it’s basically Dunn making three shots super early in the game, getting a bunch of non-assists, and hitting one clutch free throw. That’s it. He almost got a triple double, but it barely feels like he did anything at all.
