Donovan Mitchell is currently being assisted on 22 percent of his two-point shots. Is that really low or am I just high on marijuana? It seems really low, but it also makes sense when you watch his highlights. His teammates don’t set things up for him. He sets things up for himself. The amount of possessions where he dribbles up the court and doesn’t even pretend to think about passing would be maddening if he weren’t hitting a bunch of the resultant shots.
I’m sure, since the viewership for this video will be skewed in a pro-Mitchell direction, that I’m not the only one who thinks he is now challenging Ben Simmons for ROY. Simmons’ scoring has dropped off a bit, and while he still does all the other stuff, raw PPG is often the determinant for that particular award. If Mitchell can keep up his scoring, I definitely think it could go either way. Or even have him win it without controversy. Points are fun, more fun than any other aspect of the game. Just 1 or 2 50-burgers and it wouldn’t even be a question.
