If Bam Adebayo played on a team that allowed him to get free dunks all the time, he would look so damn good. There are a few teams in the league where all you have to do to score 20 a game as a bigman is stand around the rim and wait for someone to pass it to you so you can dunk it. The Heat are not one of those teams.
Adebayo would also look better on a team that wasn’t one of the lowest scoring in the league, playing at one of the slowest paces in the league, with one of the more suspect PG rotations in the league. But he doesn’t. He plays on the Heat, and his stats take a hit for it. He gets to dunk sometimes, sure. But it seems like all the free dunks are reserved for Hassan Whiteside, so Adebayo has to scrounge around for spare ones that fell out of people’s pockets.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing him to Dwight Howard, because their faces are basically the exact same, but I don’t see why Adebayo can’t be like Howard, just dunking it all the time. It’s the kind of thing you need to gameplan for. You need to set up your offense to get your guy as many dunks as possible. I don’t know exactly what that entails, I’m just some random idiot on the internet and not an NBA-caliber coach, but I imagine it starts with giving him the ball near the bucket and telling him to slam it through. That’s a start.
