How many dunks would the Hawks have as a whole this season if Trae Young just straight-up wasn’t on the team? Say he got injured on the opening tip of the Hawks first game and they, in pursuit of the tank, didn’t bother to replace him and just ran Tyler Dorsey for thirty minutes per game.
It wouldn’t be very many dunks, that’s for sure. The Hawks’ offense isn’t great (it gets worse when you look at per possession stats), but it would be a complete trainwreck (Traenwreck?) without Trae running the show. He’s always finding players for lobs and easy stuff at the rim. Many players who are having better-than-expected seasons have Trae and only Trae to thank for it. Even Vince Carter staved off retirement for another season just because Trae can find him for open three-pointers.
I’m going to say six. The Hawks would have six dunks for the entirety of the season if Young weren’t out there being a dime wizard. Collins would have three, Dedmon would have one, Len would have one, and Plumlee would have one. Carter and Huerter wouldn’t have any at all. That’s how pathetic the Hawks’ offense would be in this hypothetical scenario.
Given this new information which has come to light, can we reopen ROTY of the year talks? Please?
