It’s early, but I’m already liking R.J. Barrett’s chances at the ROTY of the Year award. He’s played three games, and he’s gotten buckets in all three. Not an overwhelming amount of buckets, but an amount consistent with the amount a sweet-scoring lottery selection rookie should be getting. And in a lot of years, that’s more than enough to win.
Right now I’m just assuming that Zion Williamson’s knees simply won’t allow him to play a game this season.
I’m also assuming that Coby White’s droopy afro will continue drooping until it completely obscures his vision, rendering him useless as a basketball player. Knicks fans are lucky they didn’t have to deal with that with Elfrid Payton.
The iffiest assumption I’m making is that the NBA won’t randomly decide that Ben Simmons is a rookie again and award him another ROTY of the Year trophy.
There’s no reason that Barrett can’t keep up this scoring for the rest of the season. It’s possible that his three-point stroke regresses, because I’m not sure that that’s for real quite yet (although it looked really nice in this game), but he can pick up any missing production by just doing more funky finishes at the rim. And it’s not like there are tons of players on the Knicks who will take his opportunities. They made a show of signing some iffy vets and claiming to want to make the playoffs, but we all know that isn’t going to happen. They’re already 0-3, it’s only a matter of time before they go full tank mode.
