The state of scoring on the Pistons isn’t super great right now. They have a bunch of players (as do most other NBA teams), but none of them are really what you’d call a “first option” at this point, either because of injury or because of their general lack of scoring skill.
-Andre Drummond: can only get dunks and putbacks, his post moves are comically bad.
-Blake Griffin: injuries really suck man, that’s all I have to say about this.
-Luke Kennard: sometimes looks smooth on offense, but right now it doesn’t matter because he’s injured too.
-Derrick Rose: he’s the first option off the bench, if you put him in a bigger role who knows what kind of tendinous tragedy would befall him.
-Jordan Bone: hasn’t earned the coaching staff’s trust yet, having played only six minutes so far
-Reggie Jackson: what even happened to this guy, he disappeared super early in the season and it’s like he just vanished into thin air.
Considering the above list and what we know about the state of any other Detroit players, my idea to take Christian Wood and make him the focal point of the Pistons’ offense is not only feasible, but ideal. Every team, good or bad, needs a guy who is willing to say “I will take all the crappy shots when the offense breaks down or even when it doesn’t break down”. Yeah, Drummond and Griffin are already willing to take tons of crappy shots, but the difference between them and Wood is that Wood is super exciting and fun. I doubt there’s a person in the world who would say no to more Wood shot attempts other than Dwane Casey. Whereas with Drummond or Griffin, the whole of the NBA viewing public doesn’t want to see them chuck more shots.
If the Pistons’ coaching staff doesn’t like this idea, I will settle for letting Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk live up to his pre-USA hype and be the first option on offense.
