In the three-point era, out of players who attempted at least 250 field goals, only three players had a worse effective field goal percentage than Jordan Poole has this season:
Kendall Gill (2000-01 Nets)
Speedy Claxon (2006-07 Hawks)
Nikoloz Tsktzhkitvstilivili (2002-03 Nuggets)
If you raise the FGA to 500 (a number that Poole seems likely to hit given his current rate of shooting), Jordan Poole would be the undisputed worst, and his 34.3% EFG% would be significantly worse than Mark Macon’s 37.7% in the 1991-92 season with the Nuggets (which is currently the low-water mark in terms of utter offensive futility).
So, it’s clear that Poole is not only having a historically bad season in terms of scoring efficiency, but he’s having the worst season of all time (although he’s not even top 100 if you include all those dudes from the 50’s who couldn’t buy a bucket at all [and giving them a three-point line would have been hilarious]). If that was me in Poole’s position, my confidence would be destroyed and I would never shoot a basketball again. My confidence is already shattered into pieces if I miss two straight midrange jimbos in a pickup game. But Poole doesn’t seem to care about the dubious record he’s about to set, and for that I give him credit. He plays his game whether or not that game is actually effective in terms of scoring points or helping his team win.
