De’Anthony Melton AKA DeMelto Anthony is assuredly one of the better backup point guards in the league. Where exactly he appears on that list, however, is not a factoid that I am capable of providing. It seems like he’s a top five backup PG, but in order to make an OFFICIAL DTB DETERMINATION on that matter, I would have to first compile a list of all the backup PG’s in the league, and then painstakingly rank them all through careful analysis of game tape.

Remember, there are thirty teams in the NBA, and most, if not all of them, have at least one backup point guard on the roster. And that’s not even including the players who are more like combo guards, and would thus have to be scrutinized in even greater detail to determine their worthiness for inclusion on the list. And I’m supposed to be retired over here. I’m not putting in that kind of work unless a representative from The Athletic drops out of a helicopter to fall through my ceiling and hand me a giant check that says ten thousand dollars.

So we’re just going to assume that Melton is a top five backup PG, but we’re also going to assume that he’s not the singular BEST backup PG in the league. If you think that I’m wrong on either of those assertions, you are absolutely welcome to share your opinion with me, and I am absolutely welcome to ignore your opinion. One of the perks of semi-retirement is that I can have my old man opinions and when I staunchly refuse to change them, that’s just me being a stubborn old man. A stubborn old man who subscribes to the analytics service Stathead and therefore is more capable of having valid opinions than the average non-Stathead pleb you find on the street.
