Like many bad teams do at the end of a season, the Pistons have transitioned to a rotation of players that almost exclusively consists of players who could be considered to be part of their “young core”. The phrase “young core” is a sacred phrase that holds talismanic properties within its syllables. Simply uttering it can evoke within the speaker feelings of optimism and contentment, even when the young core itself is populated by players who might not pan out. Actually, when you think about it, the effect that “young core” has on basketball fans is very similar to, but opposite of, the effect that “veteran signings for eighth seed push” has on basketball fans. Pistons fans should be glad that the overall team direction has moved from “veteran signings for eighth seed push” to “young core”. It is a much happier experience. Trust me. As a Bucks fan, I know this.

It’s true that the Young Core Pistons (YCP) lost to the Timberwolves by twenty points, but that fact is immaterial. I would like you to demonstrate to me how that fact matters in any way. And if you say anything about “building losing habits”, I will buy a plane ticket so that I can fly to your location, and then track you down and fight you, and then when I’ve fought you so good that you can no longer resist, I will steal your credit card(s) and reimburse myself for my plane ticket. Because “building losing habits” only happens after three seasons of the tank-draft a bust-tank-draft a bust-tank cycle. It’s science.

The only player appearing for the Pistons last night who isn’t “young core” material was Jahlil Okafor. The other eight players appearing in this game will all play various roles for the Pistons going forward. And leading them all in scoring was second-round rookie Saben Lee, who continues to show that his three years of college have made him a bit more NBA-ready than fellow rookie Killian Hayes. There are definitely some reasons to be excited if you’re a Pistons fans. Chief among them being the fact that you can order Jet’s pizza any time you want and have it delivered hot and fresh to your door. Just don’t forget the three-cheese Turbostix.
