Jason Smith is currently leading the league in percentage of shots made from midrange, at 63%. So, three-fifths of the time he makes a shot, it’s a midrange jumper, most likely one that he shoots instantly without looking for an additional pass. Technically, Gary Neal possesses a higher percentage, but he doesn’t count because he’s only played two games for the Hawks, and I hate Gary Neal besides.
Back to Jason Smith. His midrange obsession is actually less pronounced than previous seasons, were a full three-fourths of his baskets were midrange two-point jumpers. Remind me again why I didn’t make a Jason Smith midrange-ilation? He cans nearly 50% of his shots from that range. That, by definition, is “unstoppable”. Very few players are better (Chris Paul makes sense, Gorgui Dieng less so).
Given all that, this video is actually somewhat of a disappointment. Smith makes three-pointers in this one. I don’t want three-pointers and neither does anybody watching this video. He’s gotta know his audience better.
