One of the major knocks on Doug McDermott coming out of his college were his obscenely low “stocks” (steals + blocks) numbers. 34 steals and 14 blocks over his four-year stint at Creighton. To go with his 3000+ points.
Things haven’t changed. He’s been bad in those categories his whole time with the Bulls as well. The only person playing big minutes worse at stealing the ball this season is Robin Lopez. By virtue of McDermott’s 4 blocks (incredible!), he’s only among the worst in the league in the category, and not the actual worst. Of course, he’s a fair bit taller than some of the other dudes down under there, like Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova.
Basically, what I’m saying is if he wants to have a legit future in the NBA, he needs to pick up his scoring. A lot. Because he doesn’t offer anything else, few assists, mediocre rebounding, nothing is there except the ability to put the ball in the hole. Of course, that’s the main point of the game, so he’s got that working for him.
